Bleeding Nose Problem

Post by mars » Fri Jul 10, 2009 11:41 pm

Hi All

I have been putting off posting about this for some time now, thinking I could, and should, be able to find a thread on my particular problem. I cannot, not on this forum or Google.

The problem is that my right nostril starts to bleed, without warning, and at any time, day or night. So far it has not bled whilst I have been sleeping with my mask on, but it has bled just before putting it on, and when I go to the bathroom during the night. I then have to wait awhile until it clots before putting the mask back on.

I wonder what will happen if it bleeds whilst I am sleeping with the mask on?

I am also wondering what I can do to prevent the bleeding. My Doctor cannot help. I do have the start of High Blood Pressure - 130/90 average - started this year after a lifetime of normal blood pressure.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks

Mars

Edited reply to Ozij's post below follows

The Doctor was my General Practitioner (or GP in Australia). She wanted to write a long referral to a new ENT Specialist, as my current one now practices too far away for me to drive with my back problem. I hope to pick up the referral at the end of next week.

Ozij, the fact that you were on-line encouraged me to post, as I thought (hoped) you would respond in your always helpful way - and you did!

Thank you

Mayo clinic, about nosebleeds:
For frequent nosebleeds
If you experience frequent nosebleeds, make an appointment with your doctor. You may need to have the blood vessel that's causing your problem cauterized. Cautery is a technique in which the blood vessel is burned with electric current, silver nitrate or a laser.
You didn't say which kind of doctor couldn't help you - but if you haven't been to an ENT, that's who you need to go to.

My husband has the same problem as you do. His too, is just one nostril. His GP has suggested the simple office procedure that Ozij cited. Problem is, for some reason I don't understand, my husband refuses to have done.

He has resolved the problem pretty much by using a nasal gel for dryness every night at bedtime and, with that regime, has virtually eliminated the nosebleeds. He puts a bit on a cotton swab each night and puts it in each nostril just in case the other should be a problem.

He uses Rhinitis but any lubricating nasal gel would probably work as well.

He does not have sleep apnea but the doctor has told him he has that weak blood vessel in his nose. He has had the problem for a lot of years but it is worse in the winter when it is drier indoors.

He now uses the lubricating gel every night and has not had a problem for 2 years.

Just thought this might help you.

Hi Mars,

When you get advice from Ojzi, consider that the best you will get.

From a different prospective, when I started cpap, I used a pillows mask. I had several sinus surgeries and had my nares scraped for treatment. The pillows made my nares sore, then they bled. I had to stop therapy to let them heal. I have changed masks, and have much less of a problem, but the skin inside my nose is very tender. I put very small amount of
Lansinoh inside my nares each night. Keeps the tissue from drying out and developing repeat sores.

I hope you can find a satisfactory solution.

Jan

I have a friend who suffered for years with nose bleeds in one nostril until it got so bad it was bleeding 2-3-4 times a day and up to 30 minutes at a time. I told him he was nuts to wait that long (he's one of those that needs the padded 2x4 most of the time). He finally had the problem blood vessel cauterized, which took almost no time, and it's never bled again -- that must have been at least 5 years ago.
