...and you don't know it.

......holy Ambien, Batman, I need some sleep,
diagnosed w/OSA,
given an inadequate, barebones cpap,
need to get a data capable cpap.

We all feel tired and fatigued....but it is the gradual destruction that happens so slowly
that we don't realize how much damage is done. It clouds our cognitive abilities and
and dulls our decision making abilities.
There is so much information and so much to learn when we walk out of the sleep study.
There are so many decisions that need to be made, and we are at a disadvantage.
No wonder it's like shooting ducks in a barrel for the DME to fleece us.
I know, I was a duck in the barrel once.

Be aware that you are working w/a disability, admitted or not.
Read, read and re-read the advise you receive here.
Be kind to yourself as you begin your cpap journey.
Take it as you can, you can't learn it all over night.
Be patient in learning to deal w/your mask and learning a new way to sleep.
Check, check and triple check if you're not sure about a decision.

Your brain will come back to life and it will eventually thank you.

Hear, hear!! As usual, SO well-said, Carbonman. All of us need to be reminded of what you've said from time to time, regardless of how new or seasoned we are with xpap therapy. Thanks!!

SB, it pains me so much as I see the same act
for the cpap play, acted out, over and over.
My friend at work, who started cpap about a month
after I did, continues to have problems and is
not feeling any better. I have tried to impress
on him how important it is to get educated and
become your own best therapist......
well, he came to me this am, could I help him?

He may be serious this time. In the last 4hrs,
he now has, in his hand:
copy of sleep study
copy of RX
is actually looking at Our Wisdom and
starting to get educated. I'm going to help him
get into a ffm.
Next step, letter to his PCP for a RX for
APAP of patients choice and data software.

I have been preaching the gospel, as I have learned it,
from the book of Recovery,
chapter- Know thy pressure,
verses 12.5-17.

WHEN he gets his new Apap, I will read from the
Psalm 23
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of DMEs/RTs/sleep docs,
I will fear no pressure change"
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."

Appreciate what you say.

And although I'm not a newby, at times my brain gets fried too. It comes on so quietly I don't know it's there.

Part of my problem is that my supplier has very few masks to chose from; the seal fails or the head gear keeps stretching.

It makes it extemely hard to change types of masks. How do you find the right size for instance?

So after a while the symptoms come back. And I check for the simple things. Tighten the headgear, look at the mask seal.

Is it just me, or is Deja Vu Day?

Not that it doesn't bear repeating. Endlessly.

Good man, Carbonman. Good luck with your coworker!!!

I just wish that insurance would take this as seriously as it should.
My doc scared the crap out of me and after he explained his self I understood he was right.
My O2 had dropped to 65 during my study, if you were in the hospital for some reason and that happened it would go like this... "Code Blue, Code Blue!!!!" and the nurses would be running to shove a oxygen mask on your face.
but since Im at home it like its not as important to the insurance.
My next purchase (if I dont have to buy a battery) is a card reader, my DME has already asked why I need that.
I answered "knowledge" and for some reason that worried them. For similar reasons that worries me!
I think you should be knowledgable about any condition that generates special needs.

Carbonman, I think that for me, you're a little late with that warning. I've a feeling that mine is beyond repair. Of course, that could also have been caused by the past 18 years that I've spent in the Army. I'm not sure cause my brain is way past fried. lol

Necro...
I experienced the same thing today when I was on the phone with the DME.
He told me that they sell the basic model cpap machine. And He thought it was weird I was asking about the software . After some research I decided to call the same dme and special order my machine and humidifier. And for me going through insurance is cheaper for me this time around.

My friend at work, who started cpap about a month
after I did, continues to have problems and is
not feeling any better.
I feel guilty saying this but I have been on cpap for one week last night and I can tell things are changing already. My ears quit ringing. My skin feels smoother, I swear it does. And the best part, I DON'T FEEL CRAZY! I can't wait to see how I feel after a month.

I've been on therapy a week too and I feel a little bit sharper, mentally. Also, I don't know exactly how to put it, but I feel a little more antsy, maybe? Like I want to get some stuff done and I get mad at myself if I goof off too much (like I'm sort of doing now, hehe).

RK, you might want to point your friend in the direction of this forum. Maybe they are having some issues that the folks here can help with.

I've only had CPAP for 6 hours so far, as part of a split night study. Even having only that little bit of exposure - I woke up the next morning at 5:15 ready to run a marathon and then do advanced mathmatics. I cannot recall ever feeling like that before in my life.

I pointed out in another post - it's so unfair that people who need treatment for OSA are so out of it from all the months and years of not getting good sleep that they're being told to make big (and sometimes expensive) choices while operating on no sleep. I don't know about you, but I feel I might qualify for some sort of mental health exclusion from having to make big choices!

Hrumph! There's no CPAP machine in the world that can make me feel THAT way!
