Just a thought, and Songbird can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe many copy editors might suggest putting what TSA actually says in double quotation marks and then giving some identifier suggesting from whence the quote came.

I only mention that because of what a nice job it is, not to be critical.

Like this? Please note the original was a paraphrase, not a quote; now that it is a quote, it was changed in order to be accurate. The result is somewhat different in that it speaks only to the carry-on policy and not the screening procedure. The section, further in the CFR, that deals with screen procedures only states that in screening persons with disabilities (the section under which CPAP is covered as a medical device) shall be subject to the same procedures as others. No specific mention is made of CPAP.

If you open this file, after download, with a Photo Editing program such as "Adobe Photoshop Elements" you can type in your name in the Owner's Name box in any of several fonts, letter sizes, and colours. It can then be saved again, with your name in the box and printed out with your name on it. It can then be laminated as suggested.

I think you have an extra period after OSA, since there is a period after the parenthesis after "Apnea." Other than that, I think it would pass the legal and copy-editor police.

My preference would be, and I stress that it is only my preference, that you end the last sentence with the word "individual" and the closing quotation mark. Some CPAPers may prefer not to be thought of as having a "disability." Yeah, that may fudge the TSA intent just a little, and fact checkers might argue that either way, but it would be an acceptable thing to do in my opinion, depending on your preference as the author/editor. Some might argue that the words "life support equipment" do not technically apply to CPAP equipment, but I agree completely with your wording on that.

Some would justify the paragraphs both right and left to give it that certain professional look, but I think it looks fine left-justified only, as it is. But I throw the idea out there, anyway, because, hey I'm an idea-thrower.

I think your idea and its execution are very nice, and my suggestions above are only suggestions, nothing more.

The extra period has been removed. I have chosed to quote accurately rather than paraphrase. Political correctness is not the issue but rather what the ruling says. Since an official document is cited, that citation should contain the full text of the section, not a truncation. This is especially true in that a user of this document will be using it to represent an official policy stance of TSA - that statement of policy should be accurate.

The last time I traveled I emailed the airline to ask their requirements and was told to bring my prescription. While TSA never did ask to see my prescription, I think any traveler would be wise to pack with it and the phone numbers for their docs & DME's.

Yep, I agree. I just returned from a trip to Egypt, and the situation was different in each airport. Never got asked for a Rx. Every USA Xray examiner knew what my cpap was, without any need for a tag or explanation. USA airports routinely required my removing the cpap from the bag, and did the special swabbing, as other threads have noted. But when in Egypt, I was caught off guard the first time when the scanners made me carry my unpacked machine around to 2 different "authorities" who questioned what it was and whether I had a battery. They clearly were not going to allow a battery on board, but otherwise, all was routine and no problem....just a bit anxiety-provoking due to the line behind me.

I don't have any problem flying into large airports in the US, but at a SMALLER airport, or Internationally, I'd take every precaution.

After the post about the humidifier chamber going missing, I'd take that out and pack it somewhere else, too.

...download this PDF and print with a color printer (print 100%, no scaling). Cut out and fold as shown; take it to a Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Kinko's, etc. and have laminated as a luggage tag (typically about a Dollar or two).

I printed one of this morning and headed to the local Staples here in Ottawa, Canada. They told me it was too big to laminate as a luggage tag; however, I was able to fashion my own tag out of it.

This is very timely for me as I travel on April 1st.

This topic should be stickied or saved in the "Our Wisdom" section before it gets lost in the archives.

It seems in all my editing, re-editing, modifying, pulling, tugging, proding and pokeing, I let the scale go kerflooey. The files have been redone and are now correctly scaled to business-card size in each panel so that when cut and folded they should fit perfectly - DO NOT SCALE when printing or otherwise converting.

This was a great thread to find. I use Foxit Reader (free version) instead of Adober Reader. Foxit let me do a Typewriter mode (it tells you that it will embed "proof" remarks on the copy, but these are way up at the top of the page and in no way reach the card borders.
