Rude awakening

Post by SharkBait » Sat Feb 28, 2009 7:51 pm

Last night marked the end of my 3rd week and my machine hit the deck. I have a velcro tie strap screwed into the wood at the base of my window, but I have only been using that when I use the Headrest with the tube going up over my head. When I use the Swift LT, I like to point the hose down and so I hadn't been running the hose thru the tie strap. At about 2:30, BANG!!! I had gotten wrapped in the hose somehow and when I rolled to my left it spun the CPAP around and yanked it off the nightstand and onto the floor.

I was in a panic. It unplugged the unit on the way down and the water reservoir came flying out and water was everywhere. I was literally praying that my CPAP wasn't damaged. First of all, I don't want to go a single night without it and second of all, I have a high deductible so this cpap is on my nickel.

Fortunately, I dried everything off real good and the CPAP itself seemed to have not gotten any water to it. So I filled the tank back up with water and she ran just fine. I also have run my hose back thru the velcro strap where it will now stay!

SnuggleHose - Got the 8 foot and cut it down to 6, used the rest for mask hoses.
Memory Foam Pillow - Cut my own out of my Tempur-pedic pillow. (works great!)

Simple solution.

You will need a 5/16 x 4 inch coach screw and a 3/8 drill bit

Drill hole through your right ear lobe. Pass coach screw through earlobe and screw into headboard.

Your CPAP will now be quite safe as you are unlikely to roll around in bed. (Note, avoid tightening coach screw excessively - this could lead to some discomfort)

Good luck

How about my "solution"...

Parts required: 3 ratchet straps

Method:

-Wrap straps around the mattress such that lower strap is around the lower leg area, middle strap is in the abdomen area and upper strap is on the upper chest.

-Lay on bed and ratchet down the straps... nice and snug so you are "one" with your mattress.

-Install your mask and hookup the hose.

-Turn machine on and get ready for the ride of your life.

There are two ways to solve the "machine falling on the floor" issue. Snug down the machine or snug down the user.

Too complex Paul, and likely to fail. I I can guarantee the earlobe system will work - used to use it to stop the kids from getting up in the night. More recently I've adapted it slightly to ensure my staff don't leave their workstations during the day.

So I post a perfectly serious response, a well thought out solution to someone's problem. Trying to help someone deal with the misery of ASA and CPAP. And what happens - you laugh.

Do I spit the dummy at this point?

Let me explain to you that many kids these days have a device called a grommet inserted in their ears. have a closer look. This is actually a form of piercing that their parents have done to them. It creates a penetration through their ear so that the coach bolt fits through without having to drill periodically. The grommet also serves the same purpose for ears as do our lipsfor our faces. Stop the face from fraying.

REAL simple solution (especially if you're a toss-and-turn type)

Put the CPAP unit on the floor and run the hose up between bed and nightstand.

Now it won't fall off the nightstand. Done deal

Sharkbait,I hate to share this-but will for you..Two weeks ago I watched the Red Wings before I went to bed. I had a nightmare in the night-I "CHECKED" a guy--on the opposite side of the bedroom. slamming into the wall, and calling out "you s.o.b" all the while dragging my hose, machine, mask pulled around to the side of my head, and wife trying to wake me up. Shoulders still a little sore, but machine, tank, hose, mask, all OK. Wifes still a little nervous...Feel Better Now?? Thanks, Larry

thanks for the laughs, now let the moths out of your wallet and buy some plastic
pipe and joiners and make yourself one of those gadgets that looks like the gallows
(for hanging bad guys). Somewhere there are instructions for making one.
it has two feet that you tuck under your mattress and an upright which has a peice
sticking out over the bed on which you support your hose. I attach elastic bands to
the cross piece and suspend the hose from them.
It works well. Not all that bulky to take away with you, especially if going by car.

Have I told you folks I keep my machine on the floor - it has not fallen off it yet?

I don't want my CPAP on my floor. While Roomba is better than nothing, I'm certain she leaves plenty to get sucked into a CPAP machine...

My velcro tie strap is quite effective. The hose runs from the machine up to the wall, and then u-Turns back towards me. There is no way the machine can get dragged off the nightstand in this configuration. I should have been using that before even with the Swift LT, but it seemed to be so sturdy sitting there with it's rubber feet and it's 2.5 lb mass plus however much water added to the equation. I had to give it a pretty good tug to spin that baby off like that.
