Has any member here opened up the M-series auto?

Post by feeling_better » Sun Oct 12, 2008 5:09 pm

If anybody has done this, I would like to hear what they have learned as to how to open the case, any potential problems, ... My method of a remote switch turned to have problems with data loss in the card:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31760&p=303749#p303749

I am thinking of adding a remote push switch connected across the mid button (stop/start) terminals. However, if somebody has already puttered around inside I would like to know:
  • if the switch terminal points easily accessible?
if there are problems in opening up?
are there two or 3 screws to be removed before opening the case?
does the top cover come off with no electronics attached to it, or are there stuff attached to both the top and bottom portions?

Why I really need this remote stop switch? The machine is not that easy to reach from my sleeping position. If I want to keep the hose inside the blanket, the machine would be near the foot of the bed. If I disconnect the hose before turning off the machine, [to go to the bath room], the loud air flow noise will wake my dear partner. So the need for the switch is purely personal, but it would be nice to have for me. Once we figure this out, I will describe it here, so that at least those who can solder and attach wire can add this option.

I think DSM has taken some apart. Dunno if he has taken and M apart.

This is an interesting topic... probably because I like to take things apart to see what is inside.

But, I'm not about to do that with my brand new S8.

Just for the heck of it I put this string "cpap disassembly" into the Google search engine, without the quotes, and came up with some interesting links. Interestingly enough the first one has photos of the inside of an S8.

I have not searched through all the links or refined the search, but perhaps there is some info on the Respironics machines as well.

Yup

When Yahoo auctions were active there were lots n lots of inexpensive cpaps & bilevels for sale. I bought what I could & used most for experimenting & disassembly.

Helped me understand how the machines were evolving (& thus assisted ability to predict where they were heading )

Cheers

I'm on it!

I'll take mine apart and post back pictures of what I find. Always willing to tinker with stuff. Besides, I want to do something about the BRIGHT BLUE flashlights they call buttons.

Craig,

Am happy to post any photos you take on my website with appropriate accreditation.

In my experience they come apart reasonably smoothly although it took me months before I eventually forced an S8 apart - taking the screws out didn't seem to loosen anything. In the end I decided the top & bottom were a tight friction fit & I applied force & sure enough it came apart without any issues.

Good luck

Maybe you should document that here

Thanks dsm for the offer, I went ahead and posted them on my server.

I decided to make the post a new thread. Here is a link:

I have used CPAP for over 5 years and worked on electronics for over 30 years. I could probably take one apart but would recomend against encouraging anyone to try it. They are very evpensive and sensitive. You could try a power strip and extension cord. Keep the strip where you can reach the switch and run the extension cord fron the power strip to the machine. Just a reminder never travel without an extension cord. I don't always have an outlet where you need it.

Hello Visitor!
Are you proposing the above as the solution for remote power off of M-series? When you read the beginning of this thread you would notice that if the ac power is turned off the data for the session upto then is lost (or not written) to the data card. Thank you for the warnings, though.
