ComfortClassic mask rant

Post by echo » Tue Aug 07, 2007 4:26 pm

Ok I went through old posts already and read that the "CrappyClassic" is given away by the boatloats to unsuspecting newbies... well, I happened to get one of these from my hospital. First couple of nights it was ok, but this mask really blows. Literally - leaks everywhere when I move around!

...whew just needed to get that off my chest!

Now I want to try another mask (or 10), but I don't really know if there are any DME-equivalents here in Belgium or Netherlands so that I can at least LOOK at a few masks... otherwise I'm gonna make cpap.com a very happy vendor in a few days (my BF is also in the 'get whatever you need honey' phase .. heh heh little does he know )

In other happy news, my sleep doc seems to be quite decent - she said to call back in two weeks if my pressure seemed inadequate (she gave me a lower pressure because she was worried about a few central apnea's that ocurred in the sleep study) - and I called back after only one week and she put me at 10 (I was at 7) ! So, barring any central events, I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep tonight (also assuming I win my nightly fight with the mask).

Thanks for letting me rant and ramble

If I had to pick one mask as an all-around most likely to fit/work, without having a chance to try them out, I'd start with the Activa. It's really good at maintaining a seal even if you move around. Another thing you might try is using the sizing tool at cpap.com and see what that recommends. Best of luck!

Darthlucy , thanks for the tips. I haven't found a ruler yet, in the mess that is my house, but I plan on using the sizing guide as well. I plan on buying a couple of masks at once (Yes I'm a hoarder), which may later end up on the mask exchange forum thanks!

I'll also put in a good word for the Activa. I used it at my titration study and have used it since getting my APAP at home. It's a good overall mask, I think. It does keep a good seal without a lot of fuss, especially if it's sized right. You also don't have to tighten the headgear a lot because of the way it's made to conform to your face. I would recmoend it as a good mask for someone new to start off with. It should buy you enough time to get some experience with the therapy under your belt, learn a little more, and make some informed decisions about future masks to try. I also have a growing list of masks on a "possibilities" list, but I also bet the Activa would be a good "ace in the hole" mask to go back to if needed as well.

If it were me, and I had the money, I'd get an Activa, and then depending on how you sleep, I'd get a nasal pillows mask or two as well. Couldn't hurt to try the pillows masks and see if they're more comfortable for you.

Well I just ordered the Activa from cpap.com.... then I read your post oceanpearl. You could be right that I'm not adjusting it properly, but there are a million other things that also drive me crazy about that particular mask, so I figured "why not". But since you mention it, I think it *is* wise to ask the sleep doc about adjusting it properly at my next appointment (in september).

Thanks also blarg and drummergirl for suggesting the Activa and the other ideas.
