How much does mouth taping help?

Post by KTinTexas » Sat Dec 14, 2019 1:27 pm

I'm doing much better on this my second trial of CPAP - events lower but still can't keep the mask on more than about 4 hours. My sleep doctor's office wants me to add mouth taping (Somnifix strips) to my routine. I bought the strips but they scare me a little. How much do they really help? I haven't used them yet.

It helps mouth breathing.

Is that your problem?

If you are mouth breathing and using a nasal or pillow mask, your therapy will go in your nose and out your mouth..gives you very little treatment.

I don’t tape, I use scuncis to keep my lips together. They are hair bands. I’d post a link but I’m not my home machine.

When I started this method, my total ahi dropped by one full point. Not saying that will happen for you; just saying it happened for me.

Good luck!

Mouth taping can certainly help, as can a cervical collar or chin strap. I like the Knightsbridge Dual Band chin strap. (Don't waste your money on the cheap neoprene ones you find on Amazon. They wrap around the tip of the chin and push your jaw into your jaw joint. Very uncomfortable and ineffective.) The Knightsbridge Dual Band lifts from below the jaw. It's very comfortable and bring my mouth leaks to nearly zero most nights.

Chin straps do not stop mouth breathing,
You can still breathe through your teeth.
Try it.

They will keep your mouth from flopping open.
Which makes mouth breathing worse.

Oh? Didn’t know that. But I meant the link to jay’s description of the scunci method, not my pic.

I try not to inflict that upon the forum too often!

I use Somnifix all the time. I’d need a full-face mask otherwise, and I’d like to avoid that. What is it about taping concerns you?

I taped my mother in laws mouth shut once, and while it was somewhat effective, it really pissed off my wife.
I'd proceed with caution.

Oh... you meant in conjunction with CPAP?
Never mind...

Not being able to breathe. Sometimes I feel like I can't breathe when I have the mask on, so if I tape my mouth, too, I fear I won't be able to breathe at all.

I skimmed some of your previous threads, and I see that you've had that suffocating feeling pretty consistently. People have asked you what your pressure settings are, but I didn't ever see what your answer is. Could you let us know? It'd also be helpful if you told us what ramp settings (if any) you use.

When I moved from a full face mask to a nasal mask, I had leaks through my mouth (basically opening my mouth during sleeping, and therefore introducing leaks). I tried a chin strap but that didn't help. I have been taping since (using some 3M micropore medical tape, which is cheap and easy to remove), and leaks are gone. It has also helped condition my brain that breathing should be done through the nose and not the mouth, and I think I have fewer leaks now even if I sleep with a nasal mask and no tape.

I use 1” wide paper surgical tape from Walgreens. It works perfect for me. Im not a big fan of the chin strap.
