No REM...

Post by Shaare » Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:21 am

Greetings,

I've been using this machine since January and am about to chuck it, thus I am here for help.

The problem is with any of these masks I can't truly have deep sleep.
Looking at the sleep study, which confirmed my thoughts, between 3 and 5 is where I get into deep sleep that makes me wake up not sleepy.

When I go into deep sleep, my throat relaxes and mouth open or not air is pushed in and dries it to wallpaper levels.
And thus I didn't have a good night sleep since I got the machine.
I need the airsense set to 10-16 otherwise the number of incidents starts to go up and so I'm in a catch 22.

Any ideas, however much shooting from the hips they may be, are WELCOMED.

Thank you for your time,

Antoine

Use a full face mask or use a chin-strap and tape.

Do you have the Airsense 10 that you mention in your post or the AirCurve VAUTO Bilevel you have in your profile?
I agree that you may need a full face mask or tape to keep your mouth closed.

i use the above methods with good results. i slightly modify the scunci method described in the link to accommodate by big yap.

to help with dry mouth, i recommend xylimelts .

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

How do you KNOW what sleep stages you're having or not having? Sleep study reports aren't much of an indication of what we have when we're sleeping in our own beds.
First of all, "REM" stage sleep is NOT "deep" sleep......it's a lighter stage. Stages 3 and 4 are the deeper stages.
It's also possible that the changing pressures are disturbing your sleep and bumping you out of or keeping you from getting deeper sleep. Changing pressures MAY be keeping you in the lighter sleep stages.
Try a full face mask (or tape your mouth shut) and straight pressures for a period of time to see if that helps.

Using a full face mask, finding a way to keep your mouth shut to keep your mouth from drying out is not a one-or-the-other question, but may be best to do both: just using the full mask may assist in the required pressures being maintained, but depending on your situation and physiology, won't be sufficient to prevent waking up with a dry mouth.

I've found that even with a FFM, it's just not enough to keep my mouth from drying out, and there isn't a temperature/humidity setting that seems to be viable if my mouth is open: I've always had a dry mouth compared to others, it seems, likely from autoimmune issues.

If a full face mask does not help some thing like biotene for dry mouths will help

Wow you guys are awesome!
I've ordered a chin strap and may go for the ResMed F30 thereafter.

You are correct, I don't know the terminology or name of the sleep period. I know its the one that causes me to wake refreshed and where my throat muscles go completely loose.

I made a mistake I updated my profile to show the correct model. It's the normal Auto set that I can switch from CPAP to APAP.

Here are a few links for you to bone up on sleep architecture and dreaming. There are lots or resources here on CPAPTalk and on the web for anything you want to know. It's been discussed here many times before. (and some of the links are so old that they no longer work)
