Pls help! I am sleepy and tired but after 3-4 hrs CPAP energizes me & cannot fall asleep??????

I really need some help to figure out why the CPAP energizes me after 3-4 hrs - when I am still sleepy. I go to bed at 10 pm routinely and fall asleep quickly without issues. After 3-4.5 hours I wake up to use the restroom. Then, when I try and fall back to sleep, the CPAP seems to energize me and am unable to fall back to sleep. I then will feel really sleepy and try to fall back to sleep and the CPAP will energize me again. I go thru this routine 4-6 times without success. I have set the ramp on with lower start settings, which does not help.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes it happens to me though I can usually go 5-6 hours before waking up and being unable to go back to sleep. I'm still a bit tired but like you I'm too energized to sleep. It's a weird feeling really. I can't imagine how good it would feel a full 8 hours with CPAP. I've only been using it for 2 months so maybe that will come with time.

If you don't already, start going to bed and getting up at the same time, more or less, even on the weekend. Also, my rule is that I wake up and try to go back to bed, if I can't fall back asleep within 30 minutes I force myself to get up and go do something else for a while. Lying in bed awake and frustrated just makes it worse for me. And of course, avoiding caffeine and alcohol at least 4 hours before bed is helpful as well. I had a huge glass of wine and a cocktail the other night, and then I woke up after like 3 hours and could not sleep another second.

For those that are new to therapy, Your brain was used to waking you up at specific times, now, YOU are trying to get significant sleep, but your brain is still telling you that it is the boss, not you. It takes time for the body... especially the brain to get used to sleeping in a different manner, but soon things will change and you will get that 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep that you need and want. Some patients go to at least 6 months before things get used to the change, others have immediate relief. Keep at it and you will win in the long run... patience and it will sneak up on you gradually. Good luck

Sometimes this happens to me.
Seems that when I wake, I wake UP--after 2 or three hours.
Then I lie there, in the dim light cast by the illuminated overpass.
Is it light--or am I just not really sleepy?
Once I drift off, I can go way longer than needed. Ugh!
Time to look for a decent eye mask.
I gave up long ago--time to go shopping.
Again.

thanks for the link! i'm down to a very shabby mask that i took off of a british airways flight from long ago. these look very similar and has a good price, too!

Woke up at 3:30 am today lol. Couldn't' get back to sleep. At least I don't feel that tired. Yet.

When I would have that situation, I took a benadryl tablet...check with your doctor first

It's my own fault. I overslept the day before. Before CPAP I could get away with that. Not anymore I guess.
