Higher pressures cause mouth opening

Post by MaxINTJ » Fri Aug 11, 2017 4:55 am

I have been using a Dreamwear nasal pillow mask and it has been about as comfortable as I think it can get (with an air compressor hooked to my face), but now I have been increasing pressure for suspected UARS, and the higher pressure seems to be blowing my mouth open enough that I will wake up either with a dry mouth or a slight gagging. I am definitely not a mouth breather, I just think the pressure is enough to do it.

I realize a FFM (the CPAP kind, not the adult kind) would most likely stop the problem, but I don't recall seeing any that didn't have a front mounted hose. I'm a 90% stomach sleeper, so I can have that much "stuff" on my face and get comfortable.

Anyone have mask suggestions? Other suggestions? No, I have no desire to tape or get a strap (they don't seem to work that well anyway).

Thanks,

Phillips 960 AutoSV Paving Brick, Phillips Dreamwear Mask - Nothing is working.
Diagnosis of crappy sleep, desats under 80, maybe UARS

One thing you might try is a soft cervical collar which will support your jaw and may help with mouth leaks. They are relatively inexpensive at CVS, etc. so the cost risk is not too much.

Ummm - how do you know you're not a mouth breather when asleep at 4 am when your bed partner may also be asleep)?

But your guess about pressure causing some to occur may be true, however all masks have front hoses (not sure how they could work otherwise after all).

What I do suggest you do is google 'falcon sleeping position' which apparently works for many stomach sleepers.

Because, I normally never get a dry mouth or gagging, and I didn't when the pressures were 7 or 8. It's only started after going to 10.

The Dreamwear has the hose connection at the top of the head - which is why I got it.

Not gonna happen. I snuggle my face into and hug my pillows. In any case, just switching sides in that position (with 2-3" of "device" stuck on the front of my face) would probably wake me up, and if the move didn't, laying on top of the hose would.

You should explore options which have been proven to be effective instead of taking positions based on personal ignorance.

Sorry, but I can't understand what you are saying. Can you elaborate in clear terms?

When you are sleeping on your stomach, how is your head positioned? To one side or the other? Straight down!!?? It is not clear from your description.

What do you mean by switching sides? Do you change sides or not?

Did you look at the falcon position? http://www.uarsrelief.com/sleeppositions.html
