Strong plastic smell on new Fisher Paykel

Post by armynavyx3 » Mon Oct 01, 2012 11:29 pm

I got a new cpap machine a month ago. I run it everyday to get the plastic smell out of it and it still smells like plastic. It gives me a headache and makes me dizzy. Any suggestions how to rid my new machine of that new car smell that makes me ill? It's not like a hose or mask you can soak. Can I sit it out in the sun or will it ruin the machine?

I have never run into that problem. If it were me, I would run the unit next to an open window for a few hours. Be sure that the filter is changed afterwards.

Take it back to where you got it and see if they'll exchange it for another one. Tell them the plastic smell is making you sick.

I had an issue like that as well. I am now of the opinion that the bedside table I had it on, had a plastic finish on the bedside table, instead of shellac or varnish. The humidifier heat warmed up the plastic, pulled fumes into machine, and I had an ugly Plastic smell.

Edit: You did put water into the humidifier it, right?

Edit #2: Uh, do u have a Climate line hose, and is it on? Maybe it is malfunctioning.

I was expecting a smell from my new machine but thankfully I haven't had one. I like the post about maybe pulling smell from heated table varnish etc.

I soaked my hose and nose pillows in 50% vinegar / 50% tap water the first day, then washed thoroughly with dishsoap, rinsed well, and hung the parts out to dry. This took care of it for me.

Definitely NOT EXTERNAL and not from the hose or mask ---- very strong sickening plastic sharp odor hours after use it's still there!! Smell lingers in back of throat / nostrils (memory of smell ?? ) for days. Really obnoxious.
New unit replaced old model that had no such problem.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning." - Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore - "Apocalypse Now".

And, I love the smell of "plastic" from a new CPAP machine. Kind of like a "new car" interior smell.

Usually lasts for about 100 hours or so and then dissipates from use.

My new F & P icon series machine has a strong plastic smell which will not go away after 5 nights of use, also some additional day running to clear the smell. Today I awoke with a headache, and I don't get headaches. I'm worried that the chemicals may be harming me. I'll contact the agent today to find out what to do. No such problem with my first F & P machine which I started using 4 1/2 years ago.

No idea what this could be, but I hope this is resolved soon for you.

The smell from my F&P when the water chamber is empty will wake me up. It is the worst plastic, and at the same time acrid smell - blegh! You might just check under the water reservoir for any plastic lining or if the metal bottom on the reservoir is catywhampus, a technical term for jacklegged and unaligned. Check the empty chamber inside your machine while you have the reservoir removed for any packing stuff - film used to protect parts during shipping and such.

That is all I got.

Kind regards,
GB

I was able to get a new machine after a power failure fried the one I had (Icon model.)
Lucky me, I did have that acrid, glue, varnish, plastic don't know what smell and it lasted 10 days.
Gave me headaches, woke up dizzy in the morning and gave me a sore throat for two weeks.
Plus I couldn't taste food and the odour came through my pores. A wonderful experience.

After a month and a half, it has all but gone away.

Went back to the store and the Office Manager knew nothing of this smell or its cause...or simply denied any knowledge.

You did't say which F&P CPAP you had. Is it one with the round water chamber sits in the front of the unit? If so, the chamber can be replaced (if it's the problem). Also, at least at one time, you could get two different types of chamber, so you might want to try the "other" type.

BTW, I got an F&P in 2005, but replaced it with another brand in 2009. Earlier this year (2016), my newer one (from 2009) broke, so I used the F&P from 2005 for several weeks until my new CPAP came.

My new Remstar had the plastic smell for a couple of days. It's gone now.

Same problem here with my Icon+ auto. I tried lowering the water bath heater level to 4 and that seems to help. That's a little low for me but its better than waking up with a sore throat and headache after three hours of sleep. I also remove the reservoir each morning to dry everything out because it seems like there is quite a bit of condensation inside the machine. I've read that some people are having trouble with power supplies shorting out.

Ozium spray from the hardware store; put the machine in a roomy box.
Put a couple of cotton balls soaked with Ozium in the opposite corner, away from the machine, NOT TOUCHING!
Turn the machine on--close box--wait 2-3 hours.
Remove machine and run for another hour near an open window.
Put the used dry cotton balls inside your stinkiest shoes.
I have used Ozium to eliminate smoke odor from masks.
