And SleepyHead's New Software License is...

Post by jedimark » Fri Mar 25, 2016 7:15 pm

After some careful consideration and soul searching regarding SleepyHead's licensing worries...

I realised there is something worth protecting even more that just my software's copyright. The community backing it!

I wrote a blog post about it here: https://www.jedimark.net/node/5

TL;DR version:
The GPL sucks a little, but SleepyHead stays GPL, because screw the abusers, SleepyHead is awesome because of the community behind it, and none of us will stand for that crap!

SleepyHead will move to a "pay zero, or more if you want" software business model, rather than just "donations are encouraged" to help me cover costs... not really much of a change, but I basically mean I will try to make things a little clearer regarding the amount of time and money to that goes into producing and maintaining SleepyHead.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all who have supported SleepyHead project in this regard, it has been hugely appreciated!

And I want thank you to all of you, for helping me regain balance over this stuff.

Sleep Well,
/Jedimark

Jedimark:

I will confess I've never used Sleepyhead because I had Encore for my old PSR1. But now that I have a new ResMed Airsense Auto, I will be downloading it, and will make a donation, too.

I thank you for making this available. You have helped so many people, far more than you can ever know--including those &^^%@$ ripoff artists. I do believe in karmic retribution--that means they will get what they deserve in the long run. And hopefully, you will be rewarded for all your hard work!

You have a good heart and a brilliant mind. Thank you!

I'm new here and new to CPAP, but sure appreciate all the work you've done to make Sleepyhead available for us!

I'm so glad you've decided to continue. You are right that no one can live based on anyone else's actions. You are so talented and seemingly very well grounded, that I see this as a victory for you and us. SleepyHead is very important to all of us, because this isn't just a program - it's our well being. I can't speak for everyone, but I do use your program to review my progress. SH has not only been a source for improvement, but also peace of mind. I like seeing I'm within range of my goals.

I'm so glad you are continuing and will offer this to other folks with a variety of machines.

Thank you for reconsidering and taking the time to let us know.

Kind regards,
GB

Dear Mark,

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all the time and effort you have put into SleepyHead. My husband and I both have sleep apnea and unfortunately have not had the kind of attentive care needed to keep track of our therapy and results. But thanks to you, we're both able to take control of our care!

I have contributed in the past and will continue to do so. Your work is so important.

Thanks again for all you have done, and continue to do.
Theresa

I have to point out again the reach of this project - in excess of 900,000 downloads since inception. I don't know how many actual users that translates to but it's nothing to sneeze at:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/sleepy ... 2016-03-26

Top projects there have numbers in the hundreds of millions for total downloads of course but over 900k seems pretty substantial especially considering the nature of SleepyHead and its somewhat limited pool of potential users.

Thanks again Mark for hanging in there and keeping this going!

Mark,
As a person with limited means, I rely on the intelligence , hard work and generosity of people like you. I am happy you decided to keep SleepyHead the same.
There are a lot of us who are up to are neck in medical costs after being diagnosed with sleep apnea and what not. Only to be given mask, machine and told to have a nice life.
This is why your work is so important.
So let me say, thank you so much for all your hard work.

A wise move.

I wanted to weigh in suggesting this, but couldn't really figure out a good way to present my ideas, and didn't want to add unnecessarily to the buzz.

Hopefully, the persons trying to profit off of this will profit little from it.

---and may actually contribute to awareness of patient-centered therapy software.
There may be some good to come of this annoyance.

Thanks for the clarification, Mark. It's great you took your time to make a decision and we all hope it helps you stabilize your operation and make some money. BTW, If this plan doesn't work out you can always adopt another marketing model down the road. Nothings locked in as I understand it. If a new marketing model is devised later, I think most of us will back you up... shareware, fee-ware or whatever you do.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I have no clue how one goes about writing software like sleepyhead but kudos to you for having the brain to do it and the heart to offer it to everyone that needs it. Keep up the good work! I know I have mentioned you to some of my patients who wanted to download their own cpaps.

Mark, I am so thankful you are continuing with SH, and I hope the people who tried to take it rot in a hot place forever... One of my friends went through the exact same issue with an ex employee and he sold it to a company and the government for a cool 5 million, software that he stole and rebranded... needless to say he no longer works and is penniless

I know I have donated before but I have no issues doing so again, get some sleep brother..

Mark,

I applaud you and your kind heart. Your work and your talents have helped thousands understand their CPAP therapy and improve their health. Your continued work to help is greatly appreciated. I know that things in your life sometimes happen that really get your goat, and you have shown us all the person you are to rise above it all and stay true to your initial desire when you started Sleepyhead. I am glad you are prepared to protect your copyright and I also hope you won't have to deal with that. Thank you for all you do.

Warm regards,
Karen
