I am reposting this subject in the hopes that maybe somebody can figure this out.
My software is loaded, the drivers are installed, I can access Encore Pro. What I can't do it access the Card Reader. I get the same error (above) when I try to "preview" the Utilities or try to download the data. I can't tell if this is a software problem or if the card reader is defective. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 copies of the drivers so I really think the drivers aren't the problem.
I appreciate any advice anybody might have.
Thanks! Amy

Amy,
I don't have an Encore or card reader, but for what they'er worth - 2 suggestions:

* When you re-installed the reader - did you make sure it was not connected to the computer? Some USB device installation progarm want you to start the installation with the device unconnected, and instruct you to connect to the computer at a certain point.

* If you have more than one usb port on your computer, try the procedure on another one, to rule out the possilbilty that the port is defective.

O.

This is just a thought - are you sure the card is ok?

You might want to try using the SmartCard Utilities on the main menu to do a Setup Card operation and then see if you can read it...

Also check the Preferences menu to make sure that the USB reader is selected.

Amy,
I read the two posts you got and I hope they helped in some way. I already know you knew to select the USB choice on the software preferences and you knew not to connect the read to the computer before the driver was installed. But O had a good thought about making sure the USB port is not defective and I think Derek's thought about the card being bad, too, is a good one. Two new things we didn't think of yet.

In answer to your question, though, from last night, yes, my green lights does go out after a little while on the reader while the card is still in it, so that is fine.

Let me know if you had any better luck today. Sorry I couldn't come up with the answer for you last night, but I'll keep thinking. Or maybe one of the other two suggestions might shed some light on what is going wrong. I really feel for you and the frustration this is causing you.

I've had a similiar problem and have found that the card is touchy in the card reader. When you put it in the reader, make sure the green light comes on. When you try to access the card, does the light turn red? This can mean that it is not picking up the data from the card properly. Try reinserting the card. Sometimes it takes me up to 5 trys to get it to read. The actual read area is small to begin with and it has to be inserted properly to read it. This is just what I have found and hopefully it will be helpful to you to try.
