Comfort Curve CPAP Mask

Introduction

Respironics has developed a completely new style of mask called the Comfort Curve. Unlike pillow systems and nasal prongs, the seal for this mask sits below the nares without penetrating them. This novel approach allows therapy to enter the nose without irritation of the nares.

Included

All Sizes of Nasal Cushions

Comfort Curve Nasal Seal Small, medium and large cushions. This is nice as many masks only come with one or 2 sizes and makes internet purchasing difficult.

Sizing Guide

Comfort Curve Sizing Measurement Guage The outside of the plastic bag has a sizing guide to determine the cushion to use

Headgear and Spare Clips

Comfort Curve Headgear and Spare Clips Headgear and spare headgear clips.

Light Weight Tubing

Comfort Curve Hose Tubing Even with the Y split, the tubing is exceptionally lightweight and flexible.

Carrying Pouch

Comfort Curve Carry Bag Pouch This is a nice addition; it keeps everything together and fits nicely in the back pouch of the Respironics carrying case.

Startup Snags

Comfort Curve Elbow Snap The unit that I received had a defect in the elbow connections so my initial testing was delayed. In the elbow connection picture, as shown, the elbows snap into the cross tube assembly.

The problem was with the elbow itself, no matter what position I was in, I could not stop the leaking. I was able to use a bit of saran wrap to act as a gasket to seal the elbow connection. I have been in touch with Respironics and they are looking into the problem. If you receive one that appears to be leaking in this manner, call them and they will exchange the mask for you.

DO NOT LET THIS DETER YOU FROM TRYING THE MASK!!

Once I resolved this initial problem I was able to try the mask for actual sleeping.

Fitting The Mask

Comfort Curve Nasal Seal Below Nose To fit the mask, you receive an "IKEA STYLE" instruction sheet. In other words, NO WORDS!! The little pictures give you an idea of how to fit the mask, but lack the biggest instruction:

DO NOT PUT THE TIP OF YOUR NOSE IN THE CUSHION!!

If you put the tip of your nose in the cushion, you will be very frustrated and NEVER get it to stop leaking!

Once you have placed the cushion UNDER your nose, you will need to adjust the adjustable cheek pads to sit on your cheek bones.

As shown in the on the left, you will need to angle the cheek pads downward on the outside edge.

A clip is included to hold the tubing together and is shown below clipped to the sheet.

Comfort Curve Clipped to Bed

Side Sleeping

Comfort Curve Side Sleeper I find it is very comfortable, but I think that my memory foam pillow has a big influence on it.

Noise and Vent Location

Comfort Curve Side Sleeper I find that it is quieter than the Aeiomed Aura and on par with the Puritan Bennett Breeze. The vents are on either side of the Respironics logo in the picture below and angled downward. There is a slight "Darth Vader" effect, but it is barely noticeable.

Comfort. Does It Leave Red Marks?

In a word, NO!

I know that there have been a number of comments regarding Respironics Masks and comfort as being mutual exclusives, but this time they really did a good job; the silicone pads do a great job of cushioning the mask and stabilizing it. Additionally, the headgear is very minimal.

Conclusion

Prior to receiving this mask, I was using the Aeiomed Aura, but after 3 nights, I think I have a new favorite mask!
