Re: ASV: HOW DOES IT WORK?

máirtín Depends on brand & they work quite differently. I'll assume you are 1stly interested in the Respironics ASV. This is a simplified explanation as it gets too messy trying to explain all the algorithms at play in the latest version of the machine. Also these algorithms are a changing thing & s...

Re: big breaths, THEN the OA happens-NotMuffy could you comment?

<snip> Another idea- in reading suggested by dsm and others, when breathing is under chemical feedback control, bigger breaths would lower blood pCO2 below the apneic threshold, so an apnea could follow deep breathing (I don't have the reference(s) to hand at the moment). Yes, that's actually why N...

Re: Calculate Your Life Expectancy (and Virtual Age)

Hey, I need to run through this myself when there is time available - http://www.peterrussell.com/Odds/VirtualAge.php They need to add sleep apnea, treated or untreated, AHI. If you do the exercise let us know what you think of the tool. Hmmm, That test is a well thought out & interesting one to do...

Re: Does anyone use a "Brick" CPAP?

And are just fine? Feel like they are sleeping well, and rested? Just curious. Are you meaning the older Remstar Auto ? circa 2005/6 (we used to call that the 'brick'). If yes it was one of the better cpaps I owned. Whilst at that time the data was good (still is) the newer machines are a techie's ...

Re: Dr. Krakow, salesman extraordinaire?

On the issue of insomnia. I heard it get mentioned in the Respironics webinar linked to by Karen.\ It was cited as a distinct symptom when the Dr was talking of ASV & its use in Heart issues. http://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t66744/The-Nuts-and-Bolts-of-PAP-therapy.html It caught my attention to he...

Re: The Nuts and Bolts of PAP therapy

Karen, Good post - a worthwhile presentation. Explained quite well & should work for most people even if in a couple of places it may get technical. I would highly recommend it to Paper_Nanny to listen to the info regarding AVAPS with a backup rate. There may be something of value in it for her. Wha...

Re: Dr. Krakow, salesman extraordinaire?

Mike Thanks for your extensive response & what it does is allow us plebs to see alternative perspectives. We can all draw our own conclusions and undoubtedly that may vary between us. If this were a show about America's Most Talented (Cpap Therapists) I will award this bout to Dr K. But don't refrai...

Re: big breaths, THEN the OA happens-NotMuffy could you comment?

Robysue Tks for such clear images - I have some questions re the data - I don't have a PR1 & haven't really looked at the charts off this machine in detail but am wondering if those red squares represent 'Pressure Pulses' ? (am sure they are). In the one at the bottom chart with the CA you appear to...

Re: Searching For Something--Can't Find It Due To Poor Memory

Some time back, someone posted a comment about some well-respected doctor--it may have been Dr. Krakow, Dr. Parks, or another doctor. They posted the approximate percentage of patients of this specialist that were given certain machines. I think there were three categories, like ASV, Bilevel, and p...

What, I don't "heckle". I "ask challenging, thought-provoking questions". Anyway, still at the beach. However, perhaps you might ask their position on off-label uses of ASV, such as CPAP intolerance, UARS, insomnia, athelete's foot, carpenter ant infestations, anal seepage, and world hunger. Wow!!!...

Re: Review: Pad-A-Cheek Quattro FX Mask Liner

DSM, sorry for my lack of reply. I tend to agree with Vader ... the FX seems to work a little better. It's not perfect, but with the mask liners it does a pretty good job for me. The normal Quattro worked okay, but the forehead bridge would sometimes get very painful on my forehead. No fun. Tks Joh...

Re: death of member

My husband was dealing with sleep apnea for some time. It was an extremely difficult issue to deal with. Although he was using the machine (and had tried several before he finally found a mask and machine that seemed to work reasonably well) it did not completely solve his health issues. He was alw...
