Aside from whether or not it caused the OP's cancer, I am very surprised that our machines don't turn off the heating unit when there is no water left. Surely whatever that noxious smell represents isn't something we want blasted into our lungs periodically.

They all use proprietary methods for event detection and for automatic pressure adjustment.
