In either the Heated humidifier with or without heated hose, if you set the dial to zero it turns off the heater plate and the hose (if you have the heated hose option). So if you set it to zero the humidifier isn't powered on at all.

At almost 5,000 hours I wouldn't call that gently used. That's almost half the life of the unit.
